WINNIPEG—Hoot Reading, an online literacy service that provides one-on-one reading lessons with experienced classroom teachers, today announced that they will be offering free reading lessons for the entire day on February 5th, 2020, in celebration of World Read Aloud Day.
“LitWorld’s annual World Read Aloud Day has become a movement engaging hundreds of millions of people around the world in standing up for literacy as a foundational human right,” says Dorothy Lee, Executive Director of LitWorld. “When communities have access to strong literacy tools, every aspect of life improves.”
Hoot Reading lessons are 20 minutes, take place over the Hoot Reading video-chat App, and are best suited for kids in Pre-K to Gr. 6. During each lesson, teachers work with students to increase fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills, as well as boost confidence and enjoyment in reading. For the first time ever, and for this day only, sessions will be offered for free for the entire day.
“People are often surprised to hear that over 60% of kids are reading below grade level when they enter grade 4,” says Hoot Reading Co-Founder and CEO Carly Shuler. “This has a long-lasting effect, as these children are unable to make the leap from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. Our impact is built on the power of reading aloud and we are thrilled to offer free lessons in honour of World Read Aloud Day.”
All current Hoot Reading and Hoot Reading For All students will receive their lessons free of cost on February 5th. Scheduling for new students will open online on Monday, January 27th at www.hootreading.com/WRAD. Spots are given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants require an iPad and high-quality WiFi access.
