Tested and Trusted: Choose Reading Intervention That's Proven to Work

Written by Hoot Reading | Feb 11, 2026

Whether you’ve just discovered your child is behind or your child has struggled with reading for years, finding help can be overwhelming. With so many tutoring options available, it’s difficult to know which option will get real results. Word-of-mouth suggestions and online reviews can be helpful, but can only tell you so much.

Your child’s reading is too important to leave to chance. When your family decides to invest in additional reading support, you deserve proof that it will deliver results.

Why Parents Should Look for Proof, Not Just Promises

Not all tutoring programs are backed by evidence. Real reading progress should be measurable, not assumed. Strong tutoring services don’t rely on vague goals and claims; they should demonstrate that students make meaningful gains.

High-quality research, such as randomized controlled trials (RCTs), helps identify which academic interventions truly make a difference for students. In these studies:

  • Students are randomly assigned to groups.
  • One group receives the tutoring, while a comparison group doesn’t.
  • The study includes enough participants to ensure results are reliable.
  • Progress is measured consistently, and the group results are compared.

This type of research is the gold standard for testing effectiveness and provides strong proof that a reading intervention program legitimately helps children improve their skills.

What to Look For

When evaluating a tutoring service, ask:

  • Has the service been studied with real students in controlled conditions?
  • Are the results reported clearly, and showing measurable gains?
  • Is the research conducted or reviewed by experts, not just the company itself?

As a parent, it’s reasonable to ask for evidence that your family’s investment in tutoring will lead to real growth.

Proven Results: What Our Study With Stanford Found

Hoot Reading partnered with Stanford University to study the effectiveness of our tutoring intervention. This randomized controlled trial included over 1,500 students in Grades 1-4 across multiple schools in a large city in the Midwestern United States. All of the participants were struggling readers who needed extra support.

Students who received one-to-one tutoring with Hoot:

  • Made more reading progress than peers who didn’t receive tutoring. By the end of the year, they significantly outperformed their classmates.
  • Students who started the year furthest behind showed the greatest improvements.

Importantly, these results held up in real-world conditions, including student absences and disruptions like snow days.

Choosing Reading Support With Confidence

Hoot Reading’s tutoring has been tested with children who have a wide range of needs and abilities. Whether your child has a learning disability, is learning English as a second language, or just needs extra support, our approach is proven to work.

If your child is behind, you shouldn’t have to wonder whether your tutoring program will help or not. Look for an intervention that is transparent about its results and has been tested through high-quality research. Your child’s reading skills and confidence are too important to leave to chance.
