Hoot Reading aims to make a big impact on little Canadians this summer

TORONTO, ONTARIO — June 25, 2019 — Hoot Reading, a leading online tutoring service that specializes in reading, aims to have a big impact on little Canadians this summer. The company  plans to battle the effects of the “summer reading slide” with Hoot FLEX, a new offering that will enable parents to schedule a live video-chat session between their child and a classroom teacher on demand.

In Canada, 30 per cent of students lack basic literacy skills, reading below standard levels, and a lack of routine can be a contributing factor. During the summer months, children commonly experience the “summer reading slide,” a learning loss created by a lack of reading and class time during the summer break. According to a recent study done by Scholastic Canada, only 31 per cent of parents have heard about the summer slide, but 96 per cent agree that reading books during the summer helps children when they go back to school.

“The summer reading slide is a well-documented phenomenon that most children go through in their early academic lives,” says Carly Shuler, co-founder and CEO of Hoot Reading. “The two months away from the classroom can create a loss of learning that quickly sets them back when they return to school. Even 15 minutes of reading a day can keep kids on track, and with Hoot FLEX, we offer parents a service that can work around their hectic summer schedules from the comfort of their home, cottage, or anywhere they spend their summers.”

Hoot FLEX packages start at $25 CAD per session, and are offered in class packs of 5, 10 or 25. The summer-specific setup is available between July 2 and August 25, from 9am to 8pm CST.
